The 10 Doctors - Page 94

Nyssa has agreed to help Mel track down Sabalom Glitz who abandoned her on Terminus. In so doing she has noticed that he managed to slip back in time using a temporal jump drive.  Mel has about giving up hope of reuniting with her partner, but Nyssa reveals that she has a trick up her sleeve.  A temporal jump drive of her own!

  1. James K Says:

God you make Mel look hilarious, I love it. Out of interest, not sure if anyone has asked, but is Nyssa meant to be older now? I feel a level of Maturity to her.

    Great stuff.

  2. Rich Says:

Uh, yeah, a little older. Maybe a few years. Not a lot. :D
It’s more the experiences of managing an interstellar hospital facility that’s matured her rather than the time passed since “Terminus”.

  3. Brian Says:

Woah! Wake up this morning, and there’s two new pages! My day is made, and it’s not even 7 a.m. yet!

Your Nyssa is getting better and better, Rich — her body language in panel 2 is spot on, in my opinion. Mel, though…those teeth! They’re perfectly accurate, from what I can recall, but they’re frightening me nonetheless.

  4. Megalomaniac Says:

Oh, wow, even more updates! :D Thanks, Rich!

  5. Rich Says:

Y’know, Brian, I tried hard to be nicer with my caricature of Mel. But it didn’t look like her.
    Thanks!

    Megalomaniac: You’re welcome!

  6. Lisa Says:

Woohoo for new pages! Nice to wake up to that. ^^

    Also…Silurian Cybermen? Freaky…

  7. Hark Says:

    Woah!

No one told me about this page!!

    *bangs head on table*

  8. ch1ps Says:

Is it 7 o’clock over wherever you guys are? Geez, i wouldn’t have known you posted page 74 if someone hadn’t told me. Seriously, Rich, don’t work yourself to death. Not saying the updates aren’t appreciated! :-)

Mel’s teeth are very frightening…does she usually smile like that? Hmm…i’d actually say Nyssa looks like the 8th Doctor now…lol! :-D If they need a disguise, they can pretend to be 8, lol! :-D

  9. Stef Says:

    Squee! More new pages!

  10. Heather Says:

Looks like we’re getting a “whatever happenend to…” page for the various people we’ve not seen for a while. :)

Mel always was scary-looking, but that seems somewhat accentuated in this comic. She’s probably the drawing that looks least like the actual person (especially that profile in panel 3), but that’s neither here nor there as far as I’m concerned.

I hope you’re not killing yourself to get all these updates out so fast, Rich. :)

  11. Dr. Bunsen Says:

Bonnie Langford was quite attractive in a poppetish sort of way. But Mel here is a bit of a troll - apart from Panel 5.

Still, there’s no way I could do a better job!

Must say I’m surprised to see Nyssa and Mel back in the game - I thought you’d dump them on Terminus ’til the end. Intriguing….

  12. Kat-Klingon Says:

Well, you pulled another fast one on me Rich! Caught pg 93 last night, then you snuck pg 94 in by morning! (You do get enought sleep, don’t you?)

The last panel is most effective since you cannot see Mel having Jack’s ‘Time Lord?’ Moment. You interaction between characters is wonderful. Now we will see which Doctor(s) Mel and Nyssa met up with!

  13. wulfae Says:

Hooray! The pieces are coming back together!

  14. Mythew Says:

Great Smoking Starfish! This is just plain genius. It’s so genius it deserves more letter. Geanniouse! The art work is Fantastic. The likenesses are astounding! What talent! I blundered onto this thing yesterday and have spent the interveining time readin every page over a realy bad dial up conection. Anyone ever notice the words Dalek and Dail-up sound so similare? There something behind that I’m sure. I’ve always suspected the telephone company of being run by some huge galatic evil empire of some sort, but a highly ineficent one. “Please hold while we concure your planet.” and then force you to listen to soft remakes of bad eighties music.
Sorry, where was I? Oh, yes, Brilliant work, you have my full support, lets invade a smallish planet someday together over lunch.
    M

  15. Other Chris Says:

Oh boy…I smell a tantrum coming on! You know, if the Doctor just told newcomer companions that they weren’t the first or only ones, he’s probably end up running by himself for most of his life It seems that all these girls just want all of him. Ignorance, thy name is Rose.

  16. Lord Antares Says:

I wish Zoe would be given more to do. She has only spoken three lines and held a roundel cover. I don’t expect a complete subplot where she defeats the Zygons with help from the Movellans or what have you, but more active involvement would be greatly appreciated.

Nonetheless, I think your work is splendid. Keep it up!

  17. Matthew Rimmer Says:

One page published pre-exam today, another post-exam. Great output this week. Particularly liked the Cyber-Silurians - amazing idea. Now to throw the Sea Devils in to the mix…

  18. Brian Says:

You know what would be excellent for pages like these? A link back to the last time any particular plot thread was seen, something like Irregular Webcomic does. For the record, Nyssa and Mel were last seen (I think) on page 43, September 20, 2007. Tegan and Peri (from yesterday’s page) were last seen on page 64, November 19, 2007. I would have inserted links, but I don’t know if HTML would work in the comments.

  19. JustAWanderer Says:

Four amazing updates in one week. Rich, man, you’re gonna spoil us!

  20. Paul Says:

    Hey Rich,

You spoke about going back to rewatch the Eccleston episodes. Have you done that yet and has it reshaped the Ninth Doctor in your mind at all?

This comic is the most fun I have had reading anything in a long time. Thank you for this labor of love.

  21. The13thDoctor Says:

I just stumbled on this strip from the gallifreyone forums and i have to say Rich you have achieved a feat that many thought impossible namely to encompass 45 years of the whoniverse into one story and you are pulling it off with flying colors.

And on a personal note Paul McGann is my Doctor he was the one who got me into Doctor Who and I’m eternally grateful that you’re putting him in the spotlight with equal reverence as his predecessors and his sucessors.

So thanks a bunch and keep your mojo workin’

  22. Davrosnfla Says:

    Hi Rich,

I just discovered your site. Love the story so far and anxiously await the next page.

    Awesome job!!

  23. Tangerine Says:

And Mel looked like she was about to cry, which would have been such a change from SCREAM!!!!!, which is practically all she did at anything remotely interesting, scary, boring, exciting and anything else.

But Mel and Nyssa should bond, they’ve both seen a regeneration (ok Mel didn’t see it, but she had a Time Lady impersonate her and try to get the Doctor to do stuff…that’s kudos). They were both dropped on space ships far from home (ok Nyssa’s home didn’t exist) and the space ship Mel was stuck on had Glitz on it…I’m sure they’ll bond.

  24. she_who_filks Says:

I second Brian’s notion about a link to a previous page. The longer this comic strips runs, the more useful something like that would be. Can it be done by links within a post?
I have some time to help make them, Rich. It could take two weeks to collect the info though. But I know it would help me keep track of the story. I might do it anyway, after I write what I’m writing now. (That was a clear as mud.) Not meaning this comment, but a vignette.

And so the plot twists and turns… The companions come and go… The villains scheme and double-cross… The Doctors–who knows what they are doing! I hope Rich does.

  25. Captain Shade Says:

I’m so in man love with you, right now, Rich. I knew my little bio-electical engineer couln’t leave well enough alone…Huzzah!!! Long live the Gorpo!!!

  26. Jon Says:

Oh, what a way to leave it!! I can’t wait to see what both Nyssa and Mel say about their allotted Doctor’s :D
Cannot wait for the next instalment, I’ve been reading though them for a while and love them! Thanks Rich!

  27. ClockKing Says:

Wow another page you are amazing! Love the check up on Nyssa and Mel!

  28. Quazar Says:

Looks like they’re not the only things to zap through space on this page…

Take a look at the bottom of panel 5 Rich!
Hang on… how did that get there?

    xD

  29. The Creeping Spleen Says:

Oh that ending’s priceless Rich. I damn near fell of my chair laughing.

    Bravo Maestro! Encore! :D

  30. Casey Says:

Wow!!!! I just found your page with a random google search for the words “Doctor Who Web Comic”
Then i spent the next three hours reading every single page. The comic is Excellent!!!!!!
I’ll definetly be checking everyday to see how the story continues.

  31. Sean Says:

Rich… no offense, but you need to practice drawing Mel a bit more. Seriously, panel 2 is almost scary.

And I’m surprised you’re finding the time for all these new pages! You seem to always be very busy!

  32. WIll Says:

yes! good pace this week dude!

  33. Kat-Klingon Says:

Links to other pages would be nice, here’s how I linked the entire comic to a forum that several of us are Whovians.

I posted a link for every ten pages — up to page 80, as there were 85 pages then — and do links for every five pages since. I’m not the only one racking up the looks at the thread, and probably visits to this comic. This way, you don’t hjave to start at page 1 all the time!

It only took two days to do the 80 pages, I am sometimes restricted to how long i can be on line.

  34. herk Says:

    Another new page ?!

*falling over exhausted from all the enthusiastic jumping and shouting*

Your Nyssa is really cute and your Mel in the second panel reminded me a bit of the Joker with this madman grin. I guess I know which one of the both you like more.

  35. Cpt G Harkness Says:

mel… pass me my earplugs ASAP! please rich no screamey! rich no screamy! but atleast dont do it like she deos it usually (a high f sharp ive read, i hate it)

  36. Grandpa Chet Says:

Hecky-poo, y’all don’t like Rich’s rendition of Mel? Grandpa does, and thinks it depicts the essence of Mel herself. At least, as much as we can get in a 2-D comic strip without sound. Rich, keep making these caricatures as spot-on as you have and let nothing interfere with your artistic vision and comedic timing.

Speaking of letting nothing interfere, I think it’s about time we suggested taking up a collection so Rich can quit the day job and spend 15 hours a day getting these pages out at the rate of two a day (with Sundays off and the occasional Federation holiday). And now that I think of it, what does Rich need with more than three hours of sleep every 24 hours. And these bathroom breaks just have to stop! Meals? An intravenous IV (not in his drawing arm!)!

You kids today have it too easy!

    *jeep!
    –Grandpa Chet

  37. Maureen MacDonald Says:

To everyone who would like a link to the last mention of a particullar “thread”: You mean you don’t automaticly re-read the whole thing when you start jonesing for an update? Shame on you!

Honestly, if the Doctor Who writers themselves can get away with bringing up badies who haven’t shown up in 20-something years with no intro for the n00bs, I think we can cut Rich some slack.

  38. Dean (Number36) Says:

Yay~ Four updates since I last checked, very good stuff. Love the First Doctor/Valeyard interaction.

Liked the SIlurians and Cybermen being together, I always kind of thought that there was some relationship between the two races, what with them both having the third-eye weapon thing going on, and the Cybermen did come from a planet that looked just like a reverse of Earth and were supposedly like Humans before they evolved, so maybe their planet had it’s own SIlurians too… still that’s neither here nor there in relation to this strip. Keep up the good work Rich!

Oh and here’s a picture I did a while back of what a cyberised SIlurian might’ve looked like if you’re interested. I always thought it was a shame we didn’t get to see different species being Cyberised in the series: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/Number36/CyberManiac.jpg

  39. she_who_filks Says:

    Maureen:
It’s not about intros for the “nOObs”. It’s about MY memory! Or lack thereof. I don’t always remember exactly what the companions, the doctors, or the villains were doing 30 pgs ago. (I don’t have it printed out.) So sometimes I was–hmm, ?? And I read this comic for the first time this past weekend. From Sat to Mon. I can only imagine what it would be like for me if it was months ago that I read about what Glitz or Dr #2 were doing. So, yeah. For me to know: Peri (pgs 4, 12, & 28) etc would be very helpful. Especially when I don’t have several un-interrupted hours to re-read the whole thing each time I might have a memory lapse. However fun that might be to do.

  40. Tom Says:

Excellent work. I get more and more excited each page I read.

  41. Zidel333 Says:

*does happy dance to All the Strange, Strange Creatures trailer song from the Season 3 soundtrack*

I feel like such a blessed/spoiled Who nerd right now, four updates in an equal number of days?! Fantastic!

  42. wulfae Says:

I would also argue that the new series is giving the background information necessary for people who have not had the option of seeing classic Who to still enjoy these villains.

In fact, I’m not sure if the two things are at all similar…

  43. ch1ps Says:

Man, how come i didn’t see that ‘hang on’ at the bottom of panel 5? oh, well. I’m going to be haunted by that image of Mel’s smile until another page pops up to replace it. *Insert Mel’s scream here*

The fourth series is going quite well, with a few subtle/not so subtle hints dropped for you to relate to past series. And Donna is shaping up to be quite the companion. I suppose it would complicate the storyline too much to add her in (i think i mentioned this before). Still, this comic is already brilliant! I can imagine the characters as if this were a film. I hope this comic doesn’t crash and burn in the end!

    -Ch1ps

  44. spufidoo Says:

Mel looks awful. Then I thought, that’s because she looks awful in real life! Man, you’ve captured her brilliantly! Your artwork is without question, brilliant - you’ve captured each of the characters with frightening accuracy, and the storyline is worthy of primetime TV! Your Dr. Who history is watertight, with so many hilarious in-jokes and well-thought-out back-references to make the saddest of geeks go damp with delight!

    Bring it on!

  45. jared Says:

I have to admitte, this has to be the best doctor who story ever. And ive read all 90 pages like 5 times allready. You capture the doctors personalities perfect rich. I mean i actually consider this more cannon than any of the books! Can you do one thing though? The thing that pisses everyone off about the 5 doctors is that the 5th completely ignored susan. I hope you can clarify why. I cant wait until the tenth doctor talks to her.

  46. Heather Says:

Wow, it’s great to see so many new people finding Rich’s comic and joining in the fun. Welcome aboard. :) I’m surprised that none of the newcomers seem to have signed up for the forum, though. Or if they have, that nobody’s made a post yet. Come on in: the water’s warm, and we don’t bite. :)

  47. Maureen MacDonald Says:

Jared, I haven’t seen the Five Doctors in awhile but I always heard the fans joking that 5 was eyeing her up!

  48. jim Says:

Nyssa is an alien right i can’t remember

  49. Carol Says:

Rich, I love this strip! You really draw the Doctor(s) really well!

  50. Captain Shade Says:

Technically Nyssa’s an alien. She’s from the planet (and union of) Traken. Still basically human. It’s unknown what if any real differances there are. Except latent psi abilities, and (according to the audios) a racial memory.

  51. Turnip Says:

    -Faints-
    Joyous day! So many updates…♥!
Still as amazing as ever…the dialog is just perfect.

  52. Kat-Klingon Says:

    Maureen

Another reason to not have to start at the first page ALL the time is — TIME! I live with my 88 year young Aunt, in a one phone line house and my Aunt gets vwery upset if she thinks a phone call may be coming and I am on the phone line on the internet! I love this comic, for the imagation, writing AND art, but getting smacked with my Aunt’s cane for staying on the net too long is not a fun thought. And yes She’s done it, for another reason but it stuill shook me up

  53. she_who_filks Says:

    Dear Kat-Klingon,

You can download the comic strips as jpeg files or the entire page (image & comments) and save them on a zip disk, a CD, or your hard drive. Then you can view them at your leisure, without tying up the phone line. (You can view jpeg files with IrfanView. Which is a free program to download.)
The cool thing with IrfanView is that I can ZOOM in on the drawings! And see background details, etc. At my age, I’m having to increase the text size on my computer screen in order to read things,
most specially if I’m spending a significant amount of time reading.
Have a good weekend, Rich! And thanks for this week’s additions.

  54. Hark Says:

I just want know something, Rich.
When r u including the Doctor’s daughter, Jenny??

  55. Kat-Klingon Says:

    Thanks She_)who_filks

    Hark

Ten is here just after the Runaway Bride, before he even meets Martha Jones. Jenny is a long time in Ten’s future at this point. I doubt Rich has a place for her in this story.

  56. Rich Says:

I’m afraid that’s right Hark. I can’t keep up with the series, there’s new material every week and I’m trying to tell a story I came up with months ago. I am watching though, and may do other comics with newer things in it.

She does deserve a spinoff series, though, doesn’t she?

  57. Captain Shade Says:

Who does? Jenny or Nyssa? Both?

  58. Fangarius Says:

Rich: Don’t feel bad about keeping up, even I find it frustrating when writing FANGARIUS, which is an extension from Doctor Who. Mainly because whenever I compose an episode to fit within the Doctor Whoniverse, they go and add some new material.

Meaning I either have to revise an episode, or simply explain it away with something else, but as I’ve aforementioned, that’s the great thing about fiction, you can shape it anyway you want.

BTW, Nyssa’s never looked better, and I’ve loved Mel as well.

Overall, I love the series you’re doing, and don’t worry about the new material, just focus on your tale and let it go from there. That’s what I normally do, because we’re the story makers and we have fantastic tales to weave and share.

  59. Dave Says:

Nice to see Nyssa and Mel being brought into the main story. At least, I hope that’s what’s happening. As for your depiction of Mel, i think it’s very close, just the darker penciling makes her look older than she should. In the sixth panel with the lighter penciling, your rendition of Mel gets no complaints from me although possibly Bonnie Langford might still want to have a word. :P

Great stuff as usual, and thank you for the rapid update. :)

  60. Rob Says:

Which doctors were Mel and Nyssa with? I’m not too good post-4, I could never get into 5,6,7

  61. Rich Says:

Nyssa joined the 4th Doctor at the very end of his tenure. Romana had just left at the end of “Warrior’s Gate” and Adric was his only companion. They met on her homeworld of Traken in “The Keeper of Traken” and she actually joined the TARDIS crew in the following episode “Logopolis” at the same time as Tegan Jovanka. At the end of that episode, the Doctor regenerated and she traveled with the 5th Doctor (and Adric, and Tegan, and later, Turlough), finally leaving shortly before “The Five Doctors” to run the hospital ship Terminus in the episode of the same name. Very in character and a noble way to leave the series.

Mel’s story is a little screwy.
The 6th Doctor traveled with Peri for a season. The next season was written and one of those stories was supposed to introduce Mel (or Melanie Bush) who was a computer programmer from London. They stop the Master from some plot involving a computer virus or something. That entire season, however, was nixed and rewritten as the ever unpopular “Trial of a Time Lord”. In which Peri is seamingly killed (a popular idea) and Mel is brought back from the Doctor’s future to be a character witness. She then simply hops into the TARDIS with him at the end. So they never actually MET for the first time.
The fandom has, of course, gone bananas trying to explain that one off, but the truth is simply sloppy sloppy sloppy writing.
She was around when the Doctor regenerated into the 7th (”Time and the Rani”) and wound up leaving a few episodes later when she decided to join Sabalom Glitz (a character she never liked) to keep an eye on him and keep him on the straight and narrow (babysitting a known criminal) even while he’s stealing a spaceship. Obviously not very thought out, but a quick excuse to get rid of her. The 7th Doctor picks up Ace (trading up) and carries on ’till cancellation.

So between them they’ll recognize the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th incarnations of the Doctor.

  62. Captain Shade Says:

But as 4 has yet to meet Nyssa, and 6 has yet to meet Mel, this aught to make for an akward reunion. Although this would make for yet another theory on how 6 and Mel meet.

So we have Nyssa knowing 4 and 5 ( and 6 and 7 if you count “Dimensions in Time”). With 5 (plus Tegan and Turlough, as this isn’t that long after she left the TARDIS.) through 10 knowing her.

And then we have Mel knowing 6 and 7. With 7 (plus Dorthy…I mean Ace) through 10 knkowing her.

  63. Sean Says:

I always figured Mel’s introduction was to have taken place after Trial of a Time Lord. Had Colin Baker been allowed another year, I imagine they would’ve attempted to clear it up, but with Colin being fired, this never got a chance to materialze.

They tried to make up for it with a novel called Business Unusual.

  64. KurtS Says:

Rich, been reading this for a long time and just wanted to add to the “it’s bloody brilliant” accolades you deservedly get. :) Every time I check this page and see a new bit of “The Ten Doctors” up, I am never less than entertained. Seriously, some of the stuff you manage to tie-in or include is just brilliant. Eagerly looking forward to more… :)

  65. Mozz Says:

Wow, those pages just keep on coming don’t they? You’re a legend Rich, just keep up the good work man! I think the only thing that could make this better is the Brigadier showing up*

    *subtle hint there!

  66. Chris Says:

Holy crap! That Mel looks ghoulish! Like a sunken-eyed grinning shrieking joker zombie.

    Perfect.

  67. Dizrythmia Says:

Panel 2 has a small typo, but really that’s the only flaw I can find with this absolutely brilliant comic. I hope you can get it printed as I will DEFINITELY be putting in an order.

  68. Chris Says:

I’d love to put in an order, but usually I find the price of shipping to New Zealand puts stuff like this beyond my pocket.

  69. Levanta T. Says:

    squee!

Did you mean “learned”…you wrote “leaned”…

    I love this comic.

Whenever a new page is here, I scream in delight.

In the middle of study hall…

  70. Maureen MacDonald Says:

I don’t get how this comic could explain how the Doctor meets Mel. Because she’s already met him in this comic and he hasn’t. So she’d just be meeting him yet again from her point of veiw, but he’d end up meeting her for the first time twice as this is pre-trial of a time lord, but then the Doctors don’t seem to remember what happens when they meet each other, but then..but…

    Ow. My brain hurts.

Sorry if I POed anyone earlier. I didn’t mean to be rude.

  71. Slartibartfast Says:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7411177.stm

  72. rkdn28 Says:

    Howdy!

Just finished going through this comic so far, and I wanted to add my own admiration to everyone else’s. I think you’ve captured the fun of the series, both new and old, perfectly! (This coming from someone who’s seen every episode from the start of the Jon Pertwee era on.) I couldn’t stop laughing all the way through it! Hope you do get it colored and printed! I know I’ll lining up for a copy……

  73. Nat Says:

Reading this page again, for I find it amusing to that great a degree.

And, to Slartibartfast: Who? What? When? *screams* YESSSS! Moffat’s a fantastic writer. *insert happy-happy-joy-joy dancing here*

  74. Other Chris Says:

Good yes. But I don’t think anyone will be able to stand up to Russel’s savvy. It just won’t be the same. (But it’ll be DOCTOR WHO! And that’s enough!) (DOCTAH WHOOOOOOOO! Hey! DOCTAH WHO! DOCTAH WHOOOOOOOOOO! Hey! The TARDIS!)
