  1. Lili Says:

Oh, how is that going to continue? I’ve waited so long for a new page, and now I don’t feel relieved but want to read on immediately. Can’t wait!

  2. Jay Says:

    Right! where to next!?

    Jay!

  3. Sean Says:

    Oh my God…

I can’t believe that just happened!

…Did he seriously say “Hell’s Donkey”?! Good grief!

And too bad about that explosion as well.

  4. Sean Says:

By the way, Rich, how are things on your end? The storyboards being drawn? The baby sleeping better? The dishes getting done?

  5. Dave Says:

Poor 4! I do hope he’ll be OK.
I still love your art style, Rich!

Yay!! UNIT! Although, wouldn’t Bambera have retired by now?

Incidently, have you seen what UNIT are going to be called from now on? All because the real UN don’t want the BBC using their name!!!

  6. Matthew Rimmer Says:

Just wanted to say I’m really enjoying the comic strip. I came across it the other day via a link on the Planet Gallifrey blog site, (another recent discovery via a link on the Kasterborous website), and read the first 83 pages in one go. I subscribed via RSS feed and was very pleased to find a new page today. Keep up the good work. It’s great fun spotting all the references.

  7. Kelly Says:

Still fantastic! The comic’s been going a year now, crazy. I kinda hope Four is okay, but I also want to see what happens if an earlier incarnation dies… is that wrong of me? Probably, but this is so interesting and entertaining regardless!

  8. Rob H Says:

Blimey! I liked the knock on effect. ‘A twinge of cosmic angst’ is I think how 5 put it in ‘The Five Doctors’ when his earlier selves were taken out of time. I can only assume 4 isn’t ‘dead’, but merely incapacitated. You have us all on tenterhooks, Rich. Hope all’s going well for you!

  9. who_ate_the_tardis Says:

This is a really amazing comic. I discovered it tonight and read the whole thing in one go!
I wait with bated breath to find out what happens to the poor Fourth Doctor.
Also I think the drawing is really great.

  10. wulfae Says:

Ohhhh, don’t be dead, four! My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw this. XD

    *A MAYBE SPOILER ALERT.*

I think I’ll always be refering to UNIT as UNIT, and not UIT. How do you even say that??

    *DONE* ;D

  11. Heather Says:

I wonder which Sergeant and which Brigadier? I’m really hoping it’ll be Benton and Lethbridge-Stewart. It all depends on what the date is on Earth. :)

  12. Heather Says:

Sorry to double-post, but am I the only person who’s not seeing anybody’s wavatars anymore? I can see the gravatars, but the wavatars have all gone.

  13. Isi Says:

    noooo! not ten!!!
    *weeps at the current predicament*

  14. Sinead Says:

Wow! - what has happened to 4!
Kind of cool how 5 and 10 have the same verbal UNH :-)

Heather: I’m seeing gravatars and not wavatars also - thought it was just me.

PS (Rich and Mreen) Leela married Commander Andred. (Days long gone - as a young lass watching “The Invasion of Time” I remember thinking he was rather cute.)

  15. Dr. Bunsen Says:

    Bring back the Wavatars!
Panels 2 and 4 (in particular) are excellent, by the way.

  16. Captain Shade Says:

    Yes! An update!

    No! Not 4!

Welcome back to the land of make believe Rich!

  17. joe england Says:

Egads! I hope Four is alright!

  18. Jim Says:

    Brilliant!
Are the aftereffects of this explosion going to explain 4’s aged appearance between “Shada” and “Leisure Hive?”

  19. Rich Says:

Lili: Hooray for cliffhangers! I’ll see what I can do.

    Jay: Earth, apparently.

Sean: Yeah, that’s my little tribute to Doug Adams who was script editor for part of Tom Baker’s era and often encorporated bits of his Hitchhiker’s stuff in the scripts. It was supposed to read “Hell’s Donkeys”, but I forgot the S when I typed the text. Sorry.
As for my personal life, I’m managing it, thanks.

Dave: Why should Bambera have retired? She’d only be in her 50s by now, no? How old do you think she was in “Battlefield?” I guessed mid-to-late 30s. That was in 1986/87 thereabouts (Depending on when the story is actually set), the Earth in the comic is set in 2006, so add 20 years or so… She might be close to retirement by this point. But I don’t know much about the British military. Maybe someone can find out how feasable this is for me? (So I can find out if I have to fudge or make excuses for her presence)
Argh! UN. It’s a compliment and free publicity!

Matthew Rimmer: YAY! Thanks for joining us and I’m glad you’re enjoying it!

Kelly: Not wrong at all! That’s what science fiction is all about. What If….???

    Rob H: I like buildling suspence. Life’s good,no complaints,thanks.

Who Ate The TARDIS: Nice heheheh. Welcome to the gang! I’ll try to get more out soon.

Wulfae: I wish I could put the cliffhanger episode screem into the comic for situations like this. BNEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRR…. As for that new name. Awful.

Heather: Weee shall seeeee…though there is a clue. As for the Wavatars, yeah, something funky’s going on with those. They’ve been coming and going lately.

Isi: Not 10? Don’t you mean 4? Though, I suppose if the 4th Doctor bites it, the 10th will suffere eventually.

Sinead: GOOD CATCH! I did that deliberately because of Time Crash. That’s right! Andred! Thank you!

Dr.Bunsen: Thanks! I’m rather fond of those two myself. Kinda like the last panel too with the damaged Dalek ship in the foreground.

    Cap’n Shadey: Thanks Cap!

Joe England: Tune in next issue….

  20. Gnome Says:

    [begin geekmode]
Battlefield aired in ‘89 but was set in the future. Wasn’t there a reference to the ‘King’, and Ace was gobsmacked (to ‘coin’ a phrase) at the price of things….? It may be tied up in ‘UNIT dating’ (which is not Jo and Mike going out for pleasant evening, but is highly debatable). Probably. But either way, Bambera could still be Brig in 2008, if you want her to be….
    [end geekmode]

  21. karanadon Says:

Oh no!! Fourrrrrrrr!!!!! What happened to him?!?!! Arghh!! When’s the next ish comin’, Rich? You must tell us!! But still…

    COSMIC ANGST!! squeeeeeeeeee!!

Need to know what happens next!! =)

  22. John Jackson Says:

Egads man!!! I hope 4 is going to be ok.

Dear Lord, dont let it be a long time before the next comic

  23. Lennie Says:

All i’ve got to say is that It wouldn’t be the first time the 4th has been electricuted. He did it to himself on a Zygon ship!

  24. Jess Says:

    !!!!!SO EXCITING!!!!!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Rich you are my god!

Oh, and by the way, UNIT is now going to stand for the UNified Intelligence Taskforce

  25. Laura Says:

Better and better and better! That little shock felt across those six middle panels is fantastic. But so frightening! What’s going to happen to Four? Cliff-hanger page, you worry me!

  26. Spiral Says:

Little bit of cosmic angst going on eh? XD 6th’s expression is brilliant. Another great page Rich c:

  27. Chris Says:

    Oh Noes!!

This reminds me of those Interference novels. Are we going to get the Faction Paradox involved now?

  28. Chris Says:

Dave/Rich/Gnome: Britain still had a queen in Voyage of the Damned, which means that Battlefield is still set in the future wrt December 2007! So Bambera would actually be YOUNGER now than how she appeared in Battlefield.

  29. Dave Says:

    Rich,

I think I recall Benn Aaronovitch (who wrote the episode) saying once that ‘Battlefield’ was meant to be set in 1997 (although this has yet to be confirmed anywhere onscreen, and how it ties in with us still having a Queen, I don’t know. It could just have been Lethbridge-Stewart making an off-hand comment rather than actually implying that Britain had a King!). What I do know, though, is that Bambera had to be over 40 because in the British military, you must be at least that old to be a Colonel (the rank below Brigadier). However, if ‘Battlefield’ is set in 1997, then you are right, and Bambera would still be below retirmement age - though probably in need of a well deserved promotion!

I wasn’t meaning to pick holes in your comic - I was just thinking out loud!

Can’t wait for the next instalment!

  30. Mreen Says:

    To echo everyone else-

No! 4! What will happen to Tom?? Cosmic angst makes that scary!

and “Hell’s Donkey?” tho, yes, you already answered that with the Hitchhiker’s ref. :)

Mentally you’re playing the end theme for a cliff hanger?
I hope the new page is coming soon! - but now I’m worried about that, lol !

  31. Gallifrey Says:

    Oh noooo!!!! Four!!!
    Cosmic Angst!!

This is not so much a comic blog as an addiction, I need to know what has happened!

Can you tell I check back several times a day for a new page?

  32. Fizzix Says:

Oh, Eight looks like a Pepto Bismol commercial waiting to happen. (Though how one could force “cosmic angst” into the song would be worth watching.)

Ten looks really, really young in his last panel. Wow.

  33. Rich Says:

i am re-entering the time machine that will never happen since rich hasnt got the plans D: before instead of the entire world blowing, i will sacrifice myself, this is how rich, you, me us will die, and i wold like to spoil the ending for you now i am about to kill myself for the universe, four regenerates early, but later they are fixed and turn back, and it is cosmic agnst. cya life :,( rich, one more chance! i am sserious, you dont want to die because you diont beleive yoursefl? and also the time rip has started so come on!

  34. Hitbob Says:

er rich, i would beleive you as in future not you you, so current believe future and save yourself! the time will freeze and be ripped!

  35. Captain Shade Says:

There is a solution to Rich’s time travel problem…Since it’s himself he’s trying to reach. He can hop into his time machine, and just go to a time where he’s actually at where he himself is. Just becarefull though, if you’re both the same actual incarnation of each other. As the Blinovitch Limitation Effect can get pretty nasty.

Though if you’re far enough in the future to have seen this comic compleated. Could you post the remaining pages, so your younger you doesn’t have too? That might free up enough of his time, that he’ll be able to get those plans from you.

  36. herk Says:

You really touched the sacred cow Tom Baker?!

I bow before your courage Rich.

If Four isn’t safe then nobody is, so Ten is absolutely right.

    And Yay for UNIT!!!

  37. wulfae Says:

Hmmm… Thinking back to how little hair Harry had (poor him!) I’d say it can’t be Lethbridge-Stewart. Rich also said that it was set in 2006, so that’s always a good clue as to which Brig it is. n___n

*Still doing a maybe spoiler thing.*

I like it still being UNIT, with UNited instead of stupid UIT.

  38. Captain Shade Says:

Besides UIT sounds to much like cavemen kids playing tag…”You it!!!”

  39. Turnip Says:

    Truncated dodecahedrons Batman!

…Though, to be fair, some random Dalek DID warn to brace for impact. The Doctor just didn’t listen, and now look what’s happened!

  40. Sean Says:

Well, where exaclty is he gonna go?! He’s in an airduct!

  41. Jonathan Says:

Wait, since when is 9 welding? lol Is that a teaser, because I don’t think we’ve seen him in a while…

  42. Gnome Says:

…Right …Harry… forgot about his cameo. Dang this comic has been going a long time, hasn’t it? Glad about that.

As for my earlier comments: Unit Dating, just don’t do it. Neither kind.

Still, the Brig — the original — has to be in here somewhere, n’est pas? I’m sure Rich has something, er, rich in mind….

  43. JustAWanderer Says:

    Okay, 1: New update! YES!

B — no, 2: Now I’m wondering just what Nine’s been up to all this time. Which I’m sure is exactly how Rich planned it.

3, or C: I never thought Battlefield took place that far ahead of the time when it aired. I knew it was near future, I figured that meant early 90s or so. Remember Lethbridge-Stewart’s apparent age. He’s retired, not ancient.

4, or D, or that little [iv] they use in footnotes: I wonder if the Renegade Daleks will notice that something’s wrong with the Keeper.

  44. Lady Tweed Says:

Aaaaahhhh!!!!!!!!!! This is such a tease! I am pleased that you posted, yet paradoxically I am frustrated by your fantastic cliffhanger! Perhaps Shakespeare had a time machine as well and was really alluding to your strip when he said something about making most hungry where you most satisfy…Excellent work! I’m starving!

I seriously hope that Four somehow survives the blast as I am not in favor of seeing a premature regeneration considering the havoc it would do to the Doctor’s existence and personally I do view it as wrong wanting to see an earlier incarnation die when they’re not supposed to regardless of how interesting and entertaining it maybe.

About the UNIT issue, I find it rather silly and bizarre that the United Nations would make such a fuss about a television series. If anything, the BBC should disregard the UN’s whining and continue to refer to UNIT as UNIT. There are much more important things the United Nations should focus on other than a TV series and it damn well knows it. By tampering with UNIT’s name, you’re messing the organization’s history as shown in Doctor Who and frankly, I don’t see any other name sounding as good as “United Nations Intelligence Taskforce”. As mentioned, the name “UNIT” is complement and free publicity, so why tamper with it and considering the fact that the UN didn’t make a fuss about UNIT’s name back in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, why the hell should it bother now.

Considering the expressions on the faces of Two and Three, I wonder what they’re going to make to make of Four’s predicament and it’s aftereffects, though Two seems to be a bit more aware that something has happened than Three. I wonder if One will eventually find out what has happened with Four and what will his reaction be.

  46. Melanie Says:

    Ack! The suspense!

Between reading page 83 and the comments, I almost forgot I had something in the oven. Let’s just say the pizza crust is extra crispy, ok?

Apropos the cliffhanger episode scream - BNEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRR, I could hear it too! Kinda neat!

  47. Maureen MacDonald Says:

Gnnnrrr! You. Damn. Tease. With the maybe-death and the welding and the Brigadier and… uh.

What’s the UN gonna do if the show doesn’t listen anyway? Sue the BBC? I’d like to see that.

  48. Sailorgreeny Says:

I can’t see the Gravatars, it’s odd I could see them the other day then I refreshed my page and they were replaced with the same image that says ‘Gravatar.’

As for the Update? I’m happy to see it, I was going to comment first thing after I saw it but I had to get ready for work. I’m home now and after seeing all the comments I thought I might say something. I also noticed the looks on Tow and Three’s faces. I do hope Four is ok and I would also love to see the Brig (the original) and UNIT. As for UIT? That is just stupid! My dad says since it was already in the show they can’t just change it.

I do check this thing several times a day, the one day I didn’t I missed the update and that was the day before my birthday (last month). I have a lot of free time most days so all I really do is sit at my computer or play Video games. Now that I have a computer that has OS X I can check this without waiting for others to get off the good computers.

  49. Sailorgreeny Says:

I meant Two, my spell check didn’t catch that.

  50. Gecks Says:

cue closing music…. pure enthrallment! nice :)

and here we have it, if the forth doctor should die, then everyone after him, will wind up where the last one was, and ten won’t be on galifrey anymore, he’ll be in a car tardis wondering why he’s holding a welding torch ;)

to clafify, five will end up in a mess inside a dalek ship
six will find himself with the master a conglomeration of other aliens
seven will be wondering why he’s on a dalek ship
eight will be holding a deadly vial and wondering where leela has gone
nine will probably get attacked by leela
and ten will end up in a sweet convertable tardis.

gosh that made me feel better :D

  51. Gecks Says:

damn screwed that up a bit…. ah well, still felt good

  52. DrkFire666 Says:

I guess that “United Nations Intelligence Taskforce” can change to “UNified Intelligence Taskforce” and still keep the UNIT name. Personally I think the BBC should tell the U.N. to slag off. It worked for the Americans after all. Oops!

Hell’s Donkeys!!! Hehe, love the Zaphod quote!

  53. Heather Says:

I really should go back and re-read the archives. I’d forgotten there’d been a date established for the setting of this comic already. Well, that cuts out Lethbridge-Stewart then. And given your hint about a hint, Rich, the “Shame” pretty much confirms Bambera.

I have to say, I much preferred her as the female Dave Lister than as Bambera.

And I didn’t say so earlier, but I’d like to add my voice to those who’ve complimented you on panel 2 in particular. That’s a really good rendering of 4. The string of 5 through 10 was nothing short of inspired, too. Especially with 3 in the background looking totally unperturbed, and 2 wondering what the heck’s up with 7.

  54. Aynisha Says:

Woohoo, so exciting to see a new page! :D

  55. Vroom Socko Says:

Hey Rich, long time listener, first time caller. I could comment on how great panel 2 is, or how amazing the whole of this installment is, or how phenominal the entire strip has been. But all I can say is…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0ii1T1415M

Can’t wait for the next installment.

    Can.

    Not.

    Wait.

  56. spookette Says:

I am simply aghast. :O Oh, the next page is going to be great! Keep up the INCREDIBLE work, Rich!

  57. Jay Says:

    Right Where to next!

Was my frisit comment on the ne panel.and has nothing to do with Earth like was mentioned i a little bit later post comment.

But ws something the 8th Doctpr said at the end of that 1996 telemovie when he knew he had to go on and move on to his next phase of hsi new 8th doctor regenration which he did somewhat strangly as seen in further adventures of the 8th doctors own time line. But!

    Jay!

  58. Jeremy Says:

I just wanted to say how much I love this comic. i only just recently found it and am all caught up. Great work!

  59. Mr Scirev Says:

Great stuff as always.. hope 4th Doc is ok…

Meanwhile I got a friend to visit this comic too so you have a new reader too :)

  60. hmc Says:

Where has it been said the the BBC can’t use UNIT any more first time I’ve heard of it. In fact they have been using it in the latest Torchwood series as Martha has been working for them. I don’t get UNIT would seem to be quite good publicity for THE UN, they have always been the good guys, competent on the whole and actually get things done, more than real UN does anyway.;)

  61. Dave Says:

    hmc,

The BBC can still use the UNIT acronym, but they cannot use the name United Nations anymore - Russel T Davies announced this in a few publications (like Doctor Who Monthly magazine and SFX). That’s why they have only been called UNIT, and not their full name, in Torchwood and Doctor Who recently (the last time their full name was used was by the Ninth Doctor in ‘Aliens of London’. Hence they have changed the name to UNified Intelligence Taskforce - doesn’t have the same snazzy ring to it if you ask me!

I agree with you, however - UNIT were far more effective than the real UN has ever been!!!

  62. Barima Says:

The “Shame!” line practically advertised Bambera - and I’ve only seen Battlefield once. Surprised it was caught by so few. 4’s priceless comment about letting himself go hasn’t been caught by anyone - shame!

Hope the scarf’s OK. ‘Cause if you mess with the scarf, the Doctor will kick your ar– you get the picture

  63. Heather Says:

Actually, I’m sure many of us caught 4’s comment on letting himself go, just as I’m sure many of us caught the changing personal pronouns, the “Shame”, and so on. I know in my case I don’t feel a burning compulsion to point out every tiny little thing I’ve spotted in the comic, and I daresay the other’s who’ve no doubt spotted the same things haven’t spent a whole post listing all the cute things they noticed for similar reasons.

Just because we haven’t said anything about them, doesn’t mean we’re sitting here oblivious to the nuances. :)

  64. George Says:

Unhgaspackohhunhunh… first Romana, now 4? Yikes! I’m on TEN tenterhooks!

  65. Rob Says:

Kelly said “Still fantastic! The comic’s been going a year now, crazy. I kinda hope Four is okay, but I also want to see what happens if an earlier incarnation dies… is that wrong of me? Probably, but this is so interesting and entertaining regardless!”

    Let’s kill off Seven then…

  66. Gnome Says:

    Why kill Seven?

The only niggle I’d have with ‘killing off’ the Fourth Doctor, is that, despite how interesting it could be to see that play out, I’d be very surprised if it didn’t lead to a dissatisfying ‘reversal of time’ at some point, where the ‘death’ and repercussions would be undone….

    Wouldn’t it?

  67. Renegade Dalek Says:

Thing is, if the Doctor never existed after the 4th, then, considering that the Doctor has gone backwards and forwards in time so often to save planets, time would collapse.

  68. Thomas Says:

Not necessarily - since all the Doctors are presumably out of time, time might be able to hold itself together (although it must be under quite a bit of stress given that for 9 and 10 the Web of Time has collapsed into wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey whereas for everyone else it’s still nice and structured).

  69. Jay Says:

Yeah you know this is getting kind of silly.

You just can not kill of nay of the doctor’
s with out the rest be affected .

And then stiking back and reversing naything ha;;ening to any ogf them out of time and or not.

The doctors are all one and the same linked by there own symbiontic sleves jsut as the Doctors are linke to the tardis in this very same fashion do naything to any one of them and it would have very serious consequences to the rest and they wil take care of what ever is needed to cover and or correct this.

After all the Doctors have gone into N space out side of tiem and space itself and into paraelle dimesions et all.

So to think you might kill one without the others doing some about it is kind of very foolish thinking.

And this stuff about timey wimey wibbley wobbly has only been use just maybe two times in all of th history of the show so it is not something the Doctor’s take very lightly as is being used on here lately.

    Jay!

  70. DrkFire666 Says:

That’s right, if the Doctors have been pulled out of time, then causality no longer applies to them. They exist outside linear time and are therefore unaffected by any changes in this particular timeline.

Ladies and gentlemen, my moment of geek.

  71. wulfae Says:

Thing is Jay, wibbley-wobbley timey-wimey is such a convienant way to explain away things that don’t have explainations yet, or just don’t make any real sense. I think that’s why it’s being used so much. n___n

I think that eventually time would start to come apart if one of the Doctors died. It might take a while to happen, since they are out of time, but something that serious would have to have some sort of consequences beyond just one Time Lord.

  72. Renegade Dalek Says:

Thing is here’s a sort of loop paradox, Rose going back to save her dad couldn’t have happened because hem hem

    1. Rose goes back in time to the day when her father dies
    2. Rose saves her dad,
    which means
    3. (this is a guess) judging by what happened in Rise Of The Cybermen’s parrallel universe when Pete was alive, Pete would end up like that Pete (though if Lumic* didn’t exist it might not be but anyway) rich (not this rich).
    4. Pete and Jackie would be living in a mansion, nowhere nere the Powell Estate
    5. Rose, if she’d even been born, would not be working in Henriks
    6. Rose wouldn’t have been caught up in the Auton Invasion
    7. Rose wouldn’t have met the Doctor
    8. Rose wouldn’t have gone back in time
    9. She couldn’t (and wouldn’t have needed to) save Pete, who would have then died
    10. Tyler’s wouldn’t become rich and would be the way they were when we met them.
    so…
    11. Rose would have been working at Henriks so she would have met the Doctor in the Auton Invasion
    12. Back to stage one

*I wonder if he was based on Davros, they’re actually quite similar.

  73. Lennie Says:

This reminds me of somthing. I was reading a fan fic of a friend of mine’s. It was about the Master. There was a reported with strong anti-saxon veiws, so they drove hom off a cliff durring bad weather. his name was Tom Baker. I cried at her and asked my she couldn’t have used David Tennant or Peter Davidson. She said she had to pove how evil he was. Long story short Rich, you have made me sad TT.TT

  74. Lennie Says:

Oh oh oh! I have somthing not related to say. I’ve just gots a silly idea. 10 is with his other selves and he panicking about 9 asking him where Rose is! 9 comes up to ask for a soda and 10 spills the beans and 9 yells ‘what’ at him and PIFF slapps ten.
Sorry if it annoyed anoyone that I put it here but I had to get it out before I lost it and I was here.

  75. Nikki Says:

Nooooo, not Four. He’s the best one. D:

  77. Rich Says:

Gnome: Sounds good. I won’t even dare to start debating the dates of UNIT stories since that’s a whole can of worms in Doctor Who geekery that cannot be settled and shouldn’t be approached. So, I’ll go with that.

Karanadon: I’m working on it, I’m working on it. :D

    John Jackson: I’ll try!

Lennie: He’s a bit prone to almost dying. It’s a Doctor thing.

Jess: *Grins* That’s a little high for praise. But I’ll take it.

Laura: That’s what cliffhangers are all about!

    Spiral: Thanks!

Chris: Interferance? Faction Paradox? I’m afraid you’ve lost me.
Yeah, as for the whole King/Queen UNIT dates thing… I wouldn’t give it too much credence. It’s like trying to justify Space:1999 actually taking place in 1999. Some facts you’ve just got to ignore. Like references to a King in the 80’s episodes. Put it too far foreward based on that and you’ve got 80’s fashions and technology being used in the mid 21st century.

Dave: No, it’s okay, comments like yours are very helpful to me. Thanks for that information I didn’t have before. And don’t worry about picking holes in the comic… it’s not airtight by ANY stretch of the imagination. I’m trying to weave a story together through disparate and non-linear episodes written DECADES apart that don’t actually work together. So there’s bound to be some rough spots that we can’t all agree on. Carry on!

Mreen: Hee… Soon as I can!

Gallifrey: You can tell me. I’m sorry I can’t update more than I do. If I had my way there’d be at least one page up every morning. But the way things are going these days, it simply cannot be.

Fizzix: Hmm… nope. Can’t do it. Yeah, the proportions make my 10th Doctor look like a teenager. Oops.

Rich/Hitbob: Yeah. Okay. Look, if you really WERE me in the future I’d have done something clever. Like visit me at work or communicate with me over the phone or something. Not dropped barely readable comments on a Doctor Who comic blog. I just have to assume you’re an imposter of some kind. A kameleon robot or a Dalek duplicate or some teenage Doctor Who geek. We’re onto you, Bob. Jokes over. :D

Cap’n S: Hehehe, nice try, Shade.

Herk: I did. I figure if you’re going to threaten one of them, it’d better be THAT one.

wulfae: *whistles innocently* I think we can still use UNIT. Though it might be better spelled UnIT.

The Cap: Or an owl with a lisp.

    Turnip: Yup. Poor dope.

    Sean: Good point.

    Jonathan: Good catch.

    Gnome: Maaaaaayyybe.

    JustAWanderer: 1-YAY! B2-Exactly
3C-Also true! But remember, this is nearly 10 years after that! 4D[iv]-Well, one of them was looking at him suspiciously. You might have had trouble seeing the subtlety of his expression, but the eyestalk was cocked at a very particular angle that conveys curiosity and concern.

Lady Tweed: Yeah, Bill’s been reading the comic. He says I don’t make the 4th Doctor arrogant enough. But the 10th is sufficiently clueless.

Kevin Stroik: Man, I’m glad I’m writing this comic and not you. You disapprove of anything outside the box.

Melanie: Ulp. Hope your pizza was okay. Sorry!

Maureen MacDonald: The police tried that with the Police Box. They lost. Looks like the BBC have relented to the UNs demands though, so that’s a legal battle we’ll probably never see.

Sailorgreeny: Yeah, something funky’s gone on with the Gravatars.
Hope you had a great birthday!

Gecks: *scratches head* That’s a bit linear, but funny.

    DrkFire666: Thanks! Hee

Heather: Yeah, I wasn’t TOO thrilled with the Bambera character myself (”Ohh SHAAAAME” got old REAL quick). But y’know, she’s part of the story now.

    Aynisha: YAY! THanks!

Vroom Socko: Welcome! Great name, btw.
Hehehe, nice clifhanger closing theme. Thanks. I’ll keep going as soon as I can.

    spookette: *blush* Thanks!

    Jay: …. oh.

    Jeremy: Thank you!

Mr.Scirev: We’ll have to see. Yay! Thanks for spreading the love.

hmc: You’d think, eh? Some people are just too proprietary.

Dave: Yeah, probably better just to drop the explanation for the time being. Could always come up with a new name if they had to.
The Unfettered Nerds Intelligence Taskforce. Or the Unabashed Nationalists Intelligence Taskforce… or maybe something serious.

Barima: Heheheh… okay, if nothing else survives, the scarf will be okay. Though he obviously has a few replacements in the TARDIS. Romana found one. And there’s the red one that the 5th Doctor unpicked in Castrovalva….

    George: TENterhooks?

Rob: Don’t like the 7th Doctor?

Gnome: Maybe. Unless you’re an EXCEPTIONAL storyteller. I’d be willing to give it a go. But whether this comic is the place for that you’ll just have to wait and see.

Renegade Dalek: Hmm… thing is time is fluid (as was stated way back before the wibbly wobbly line became popular) and has a tendancy to reshape and reform. Things would change, I doubt the death of one Time Lord, even an important one like the Doctor, would cause everything to unravel. Just change. A LOT.

    Thomas: There’s that too.

Jay: That’s the whole point of the wibbly wobbly stuff comment. Time isn’t linear like we keep thinking. Cause and effect behave differently then we expect. It’s all in the storytelling.

    DrkFire666: Nicely geeked. Thank you.

wulfae: I think, as I stated earlier, that a lot of things might change. For the better for some, worse for others. More worse than better since the Doctor is meant to be such a powerful force for good. But the universe wouldn’t fall apart or cease to be, at least not because the Doctor suddenly changed. If it did it would be because of the temporal instability created by altering something important.
Okay, so maybe it might fall apart because the Doctor had once saved it from doing so and suddenly can’t. But that’s a secondary effect, not a direct cause.

Renegade Dalek: That’s the Grandfather Paradox in a nutshell and is often used either to explain why the universe will collapse with too much intervention, or demonstrates the fluidity of time (now referred to as the wibbly wobbly timey-wimey stuff.)
As for Lumic, probably not based on Davros, but similar because the Cybermen were created when humans, obsessed with replacing and improving imperfect body parts, lost their focus. This man embodies it in a single being and what better way then a paralyzed, dying man wanting to be whole again? I think it’s more coincidence. After all, there have been several “Davros-like” villains and characters throughout SF simply because he’s in a wheelchair. Like the accountant guy in Doctor Who’s “The Sunmakers”, or Star Trek’s Captain Pike in “The Menagerie” or Doctor Strangelove…

Lennie: Sorry. I was much saddened when I watched the end of “Logopolis” for much the same reason. *hands him a Kleenex*
    So the 9th Doctor SLAPS the 10th? Seems a bit… girly… don’t you think?

NIkki: Yeah! That’s why it’s so poignant!

Jay: No, you’ve got to wait and read like everyone else.

Rich, I’m glad you’re writing this comic not me and much prefer that as I don’t do much drawing and this would be too complicated of a project for me to do anyway. Also, it’s not that I disapprove anything outside the box it just that there’s so little that I view as worth doing outside the box and that I agree with. Sure, I’ll admit that there have been several “Davros-like” characters in SF but I strongly disagree that it’s more coincidence with Lumic’s strong similarities to Davros. I strongly doubt that the writer of that two-part story could claim he wasn’t aware of Davros and I see more similarities than differences, so it seems a little blatant to me, but you’re free to disagree about it.

  86. Rich Says:

    Jay: Oh. Okay.

    Graeme: Thanks!

Levanta T.: That happens from time to time. What with laser swords cutting through it and it gettng all muddy all the time….

Renegade Dalek: It’s part of his new whimzical nature. You’d never hear the 1st Doctor putting it that way.

Mreen: Hehehe.. We sometimes forget that he’s the same person in all his forms.

Jim: Um, no not quite. The 4th Doctor in this comic has already experienced everything up to Romana 2 and K9 2. That means if he died here that Sarah Jane’s Harry’s Leela’s, K9 1 and Romana 1’s travels wouldn’t be effected at all. Adric onward would have to alter somehow.
The companions probably wouldn’t feel the effect of the time line change…. well Romana might because she’s time sensative as we saw in “City of Death”, but otherwise… *shrug* They’d just ignorantly shunt onto their new timelines.

Kevin Stroik: It’s these little daring experiments that lead to new and interesting things. If it weren’t for that the Doctor would be a guy in a silver space suit flying a rocket ship to Mars.

What things you find interesting Rich another person may not necessarily find interesting, so it’s very much in the eye of the beholder whether you like that fact or not. I very much apprechiate and highly thankful for what Sydney Newman, Verity Lambert, and the others who launched Doctor Who in 1963 came up with and the creativity they showed in doing it. As brilliant and revolutionary the conception of regeneration was back in 1966, I highly doubt that the people who helped create the magic of that 1st regeneration ever envisioned gender-change being involved later on and apart from Tom Baker, silence on the idea. Point is, however daring these little experiments maybe, they can sometimes backfire with damaging results negating your “new and interesting things” bit.

  90. Turnip Says:

It’s a very delicate process, creativity. How far can you stretch something before it breaks? Now, scifi fandoms tend to be a lot hardier than others, and you can get away with a lot of freedoms that you wouldn’t in another genre. But there’s still a breaking point, and in my opinion a female Doctor would be stretching things a little too tightly. Anyone trying to attempt that ought to wear goggles, as you wouldn’t want the recoil to put out an eye if it snaps. Also in my opinion, this comic has yet to feel the strain.

In other news, I really wish they’d air reruns better. I mean, sometimes they have all season 3, and others they have none of that season. But they never seem to want to play season ends or beginnings, which are the most important. Grrbob.

  91. Jay Says:

Now wahts al this continued nonsense of one of the Doctors dying.

That’s not going to hapen with out serious disruptions form the otehr Doctors.

And just what ever did give you the everloving idea that a female doctor could not just maybe save the day at just about the last minute..
Think ye that females are still imcomportant.

And incapable of doing something very clever to rescue al of the other Doctors me thinks you should just maybe wake up to 21st cetury thinking ablut females they are not as weak as you just might think they are.

Not going to give it away to very much here but I would have a and or the female doctor find a way to put a stop to all of the Male doctors mistakes and do not persuppose that the male doctors do not make mistakes.

I belive a female doctor can be just as lcever as the male doctors given the chance.

Anyway! perhaps we will yet see.

    Jay!

  92. Victor Says:

Is it me or does the other Doctors closer to the 4th Incarnation feel the effects more? 5th looks like he’s in sheer pain and 10th looks like he only feels a bit of a sting.

Jay, it’s not that females are incompetent, incapable of being very clever, or inherently weak, but it’s just that I don’t think a far-fetched notion of a female doctor is needed for a female to rescue all of the 10 known Doctors. I don’t see why wouldn’t it be possible for a female in the form of an assistant or a Time Lord that’s a female from the start such as Susan to rescue all of the 10 recognized Doctors. I think there were instances in the original series where Romana was pretty courageous and was capable of saving the Doctor if needed.

I do agree with you that it’s basic impossibility for there not to be serious disruptions from the other Doctors if one of them would die prematurely such as the 4th Doctor. Logically it makes sense that Doctors closer such as 5th would feel the effects more than those on the other end of the line, such as the 10th. I didn’t surprise me that Doctors 5-7 would feel intense pain, while on the other hand for Doctors 8-10, the pain was rather slight. One just has to look at “The Five Doctors” to see a similar effect as at the beginning when the 1st Doctor is taken by the time scoop, the 5th Doctor feels very slight pain, then as the 2nd and 3rd Doctors gets time scooped, the pain gets higher level by level, so by the time we get to the 4th Doctor being time scooped albeit botched, the pain is overwhelming and as seen results in the 5th Doctor is fading in and out of existence in the TARDIS.

Hey Rich, could you erase the first copy of latest message as I forget a couple of words in the last sentence of the first paragraph and didn’t realize that as I submitted the message in it’s original form.
Sure would apprechiate it as it would free up some space and continue with the good work.

  96. Jay Says:

Yes Yes That can be the case as you are saying here there can be very strong time ladies like Romana and others as is the way within nay race of peoples there can be varying degrees of strenths and or cleverness.

But what i am still trying to kind of get across is that i kind of fail to see why it is that noone seems to think the Doctor himselve can not become female at all.

What is wrong with that whole idea is it so repugant that he might become female at least once in all of his regenerations and still maintain himselve in all of his essence as a female.

I think that somehow it does limit him severly tht he can not or could not experience being the other sex.

Nad it limit’s him in all of doctor who fandom that he can not be alterd genetically into female form at least one in all of his regenerations.
Somehow this just puts him in a very limited realm or dimension that he could not be a she.

And that a very good actress could not carry off the part just as compently as all of the male actors who have played him so very far.

It is not an impossiblity that he could be female himselve.

Alright so maybe it seems just to unresonable or something that the doctor could be a girl at nay time but i think notand maybe it si some kind of pipe dream that an actress could play the doctor.

As for the affects of anyy of the doctors being dimished and or out right dying then yeah to varying degrees the others would be affected but all of them would be affected and would have to take drastic steps to reverse this or circumnavigate this efer happening lest they all be affected severly.

So yes a female time lord could save the doctor or the doctor in female incarnation could save all of the male doctors this to is not an impossibity.

    Anyway!

    Jay!

Don’t we all just want to hug the Doctors at times?

  99. Captain Chaotica Says:

Hey there, long-time(ish) reader, first time caller, you know the drill.

This thing is just utterly brilliant, as everybody keeps telling you, but it has to be said, especially because I love the way you get everybody just so _spot-on_ in character, both personality/mannerisms -wise, and also their appearance, in a cartoony way. It’s something I respect in fanfiction in general, and am very strict about trying to keep with in my own. (Unless it’s supposed to be a parody) I even decided to try and draw Commander Maxil (I have no idea why) in your style, but in colour, to see what that would look like. Turned out to be a good chunk my own style blended in there as well and now yu can’t tell, but I did originally _try_ to sorta do fan-art of the strip…heh…

This “cosmic angst” bit is just…GAH! freaky/sad…wow. Poor guys. Um, guy. Just one. ;) Something kind of amusing–something similar happens in “The Airzone Solution”, and in exactly the same _way_ as was described here–the ones closer to the one in sequence who “died” feel it more… (I ended up seeing “The Airzone Solution” because I originally went looking for “The Stranger” because of YOUR comments in one of the earlier pages–you, Rich, you’re responsible for this–and found some of the other BBV stuff as well.)
When one of the Doctor-actors’ characters dies (there are four, count them, FOUR in this thing), the character of the one right “after” him in sequence gets all weak, and confused…and passes out! while the one after _him_ merely gets a quick flash of headache and looks freaked out for a moment. In _this_ story, there is absolutely. No. REASON. It is _purely_ an injoke. THESE characters are human, and not even related to each other, let alone all being the same person! (laughs)

Anyway…I don’t want to step into the quagmire here, but I will say that I have no problem with the Doctor reincarnating as female, and in fact hope it does happen before he’s completely out of lives; though I’m not actually holding my breath or anything. And no, not just because it would be “cool” or “shocking” or trendy or whatever. No. Just because I’d like to see him reincarnate as some more VARIETY. They have _all_ been white males so far, and in fact, haven’t even hit all the natural Caucasian hair colours, as Ten noted (”Awww, I wanted to be ginger! I’ve _never_ been ginger!”). While that was considered just par for the course in 1963–not having people of colour (any colour, hey, I’d take purple if he/she was a good actor :P) or females in top roles, it sort of got set in as the series’ tradition and stayed _waaaaayyy_ too long. I don’t insist on a female Doctor because of sticking up for female rights or whatever (there have been PLENTY of strong females on the show, after all) but merely because it would be _different_. He needs to be SOMEthing other than a white male one of these days. I mean, with 13 chances, you’d think they could bend for _one_ of them.

That’s all. It’s just…I would like there to be more…not “uncertainty”, that sounds bad…more…variety of ways he _could_ look, when he regenerates. A bigger phase-space to pick from, let’s say. To think that he could come out as EITHER gender or any colour is more interesting, leaves you wondering more what the next one will look like. (Not, of course, that looks are as important as how he/she _acts_. But that’s a given.)
I mean, as Rich said, we haven’t seen anybody actually swap genders while regenerating yet…but we also haven’t seen anything to indicate that it absolutely CAN’T happen. My guess is, that it doesn’t have to be under strange or drastic circumstances or that you have to _choose_ to change genders while regenerating, but more like…it just happens sometimes. But it’s _rare_. As I see it, Time Lords TEND to keep to their original genders while regenerating, but it’s not like, locked down. It’s not 100% certain, ‘cos after all, regeneration is a toss of the dice. If like even as much as 1 out of every 100 regenerations could result in a gender swap, that’d still work for what we’ve seen on the show, ‘cos we haven’t seen it happen anywhere NEAR 100 times yet.

And of course, I would insist that a female Doctor be done RIGHT–that is to say, have a lot of the same core personality traits he’s always had, dress very modestly (and if I had my druthers, at least a bit flamboyantly/in fashions other than the real-life modern day’s), probably in layers with some kind of long coat, be totally uninterested in romance and NOT have her male Companions flirt with her/moon around the TARDIS staring at her. I’m seeing kind of a middle-aged Auntie Mame type taking some younger woman under her wing like a little sister, kind of relationship…

Anyway…very good comic, really _great_, freaky last page, and of course like all the others I am looking forward to seeing what comes next, especially after THAT! Gah…
(Okay, everybody, now feel free to carve me up. I am not sure if I’ll be back to see it though, as I already feel uncertain enough about joining the fray at all.)

Then again, would this somehow explain the Watcher?

  101. Jay Says:

    Just maybe! You maybe right!

    Jay!

  102. Turnip Says:

Er, Jay? Please tell me who insinuated that females are incompetent, as I really haven’t seen anyone say that. The argument against a female Doctor isn’t sexist; at least, MY argument against a female Doctor isn’t. I’m a woman. And I don’t want a female Doctor. Simple. It’s not about thinking outside the box, or trying something new - it’s about the concept of regeneration. It HASN’T been confirmed one way or another about gender swapping, but it hasn’t happened yet, either. And, in my opinion, if it was going to happen it would have happened by now. The Doctor is the only (confirmed!) Time Lord left, and he’s on his tenth life.

  103. Kori Says:

Not number four!!! He can’t be dead, the universe would implode. And he looks so anguished…

But it was a good way of showing us where all (or most of) the Doctors are at this point- a little recap amidst the chaos. Its nice to see 9 again after so long.

Yey UNIT! (I refuse to call them anything else.) I can’t wait to see Winifred. ^_^

  104. Sailorgreeny Says:

I agree with Turnip about the female Doctor thing. I myself am a woman and I don’t want to see a female Doctor either. The idea may seem cool, but like Turnip said we would have seen it by now if it could happen at all or it would have been mentioned.

  105. Jay Says:

But you do see it has already happened like i have been saying even if it is unoffcial Doctor who there was a female regeneration oh sure it was a fan fic regeneration but somehow this has got to be inturputed as one of the Doctors even if she was not canon that is stil my arugument for lack of a better word for it..

And Yeah i am on your side i like the wholde concept of a female Doctor unoffcial or not!

CAn she not be fit in somehow some where some when.

As she was when these fan vids were made she was put into the whole doctor who timeline somewhere out there between the 6th adn 7th doctors and she fir nicely in her own ninch.

So that is still my point.

I am Male in my own current reincarantion in this current life time but even i know how humans can regenerate through reincarnation belive this or not there is nonone yet who can still either prove or disprove that humans can do this so how would you know wetehr or not we can regenerate in this way ourselves.

So why oh why could not the Docor be female it is not an utter impossibilty.

Now if you just do not like this whole concept of him becoming a here then that is just fine but a few of us would like nohting more then to see an actrees play the part adn do it jsut as well as nay of the males who have played it so very far.

That is all i ask . give someone of the other gender a real chance to prove that a female can play The Doctor.

    Anyway!

    Jay!

  106. Captain Chaotica Says:

Oh, the thingies are back! I mean the…what are they called, wavatars? Heh. Interesting to see what mine looks like, now that I’ve finally gathered up the courage to say something here. (Well not so much “courage”, as, I felt kinda silly joining just to say the same stuff that _everybody_ does, to wit: “This is great, it’s so exciting, you draw them so well, please do the next page!”)

Uh, I just wanted to specify that when I said a “cosmic angst” bit makes no sense in “this” story, I meant, in the one I was talking about at the moment, which was “The Airzone Solution”. Not THIS story, here. Of _course_ it makes sense here. I just realised I worded that bit a little oddly, heh…
Also, when I said that I “guess” that if gender-swapping in a regeneration is possible, what I meant was, if it WAS possible, this is the way I personally _see_ it happening. My opinion. Again, I should not write when sleepy. Oy.

Last but not least I’d like to apologise for my first post here being so LONG! Gah, that makes me look obnoxious. Well, I mean, I _am_, but… :P

  108. Jay Says:

And also i for one am not implying in any aspect that females are incompotent at all I admitre females and like them very much..

Females are and can be very tough in ther own ways just as males have a soft side which is counter to there accquired aggersion which has to be taught to them.

Most al mles do start out with out any of that..

And some males do learn that is is just fine to be and have a soft and tender side to themselves. it is the natual way of being realy it is it could just even be the remants of the feminine nature that all males still do posess beofr they are ever born.

as science is just now proving is the real case.

So why can not the doctor have this just as well a feminine soft side and or nature to himselve which just might manifest itselve into a female regeneration.

to say it can never hapen is kind of flying into the face of impoosiblity it could and or must never happen but that lind of limits what the Doctor can ever do.within his own selve.

Anyway it is not an entire improibity that he can never be female.

As powerful as the Doctor is, he shouldn’t be all powerful, and there were certain parts in the latest bit of Current Doctor Who by RTD and Company that I felt crossed that line. To me, the Doctor getting extra regenerations and changing sex in a regeneration regardless of the possibility would blatantly cross that line and an all powerful Doctor holds little appeal for me. Jay, you complain about the Doctor being limited, but what’s so wrong with the Doctor having limitations and what’s so damn important about the Doctor experience being the other sex.

As mentioned the Doctor is on his 10th life and if he really had this ability, it would have happened by now as mentioned and so it seems a little late to be trying a gimmick. A male Romana or a male Rani is just as disagreeable a concept as a female Doctor and there’s nothing that makes them superior to or better than the known characters and even a female Master wouldn’t be that impressive though it might be a little more believable with all the body-stealing that character has done in the Post-Delgado Era.

I missed the last few messages and I’m sorry for rehashing this controversy as this getting us fans of the comic nowhere. Jay, you’re entitled to your own opinions as the rest of us are entitled to ours and so I strongly suggest don’t respond to my lastest post regarding the female doctor subject. We must move past this subject as Rich is very much indicating and for everybody who has a view on the matter, at best we agree to disagree and just leave it at that.

  114. Jay Says:

Now this is a new kind of completly very different idea.

He doctor is kind of like the Q from star trek the Q are a very old and masterful race of peoples and so are the time lords they are one of the very oldest of races .

as are the Q who are in the realms of the federation that does encompass the areas of time space of and which does include and repersent where star fleet is located as the doctor is in some other realm of space time and the fereration is entirely very different over there as it is in other scifi shows.

Such as Babylon serisi and battle star gallitica.

they do seem to ahve very different federations in there won space time.

The Doctor has at times crossover into star trek and in a book that i have they have crossover into the Doctors space time as well.

In this book that i have the foruth doctor did materlize on Kirks star ship once and then they ended up over in the Doctors space time and it made fro a very interesting story what happened when Kirks ego got in the way of the Doctors and kirk got into trouble down on some plaent they had to go to.

The Doctor and kirk kind of clashes with each other but in tne end they still did remain close friends

    With some help form Spock..

So yeah the doctor is kind of from one of the oldest of races and they are very old and powerful as they have mastered all of space time as i think the Q have in some repects.

So i have speulated what would happen if The Doctor ever did met the Q what kind of stuff just might happen.

Two very different very old races met would they be friends or bitter enemies because they would most likely cancel each oterh out if they could not somehow reach mutual understanding two omnipotent races the Q most likely have matered time and space as well.

    in a very different aspect.

and in star fleet space time as the Doctor is in a different dimension.

    could they ever get along.

or would they clash to much and become like the Doctor and the master who were once friends at one time back on glaifrey when they were at the academy there.

Hmmm Now you would ahve to ask if and or when the Time lords are indeed omnipotent or wetehr they do ahve limitations.

I think the Doctor is if not complety omnipotent then very close to it because he has at times hinted that he is..

But maybe there is some stuff he could do but will not cross certain lines himselve.

    Something to pomder on indeed.

Anyway think on this and let me know what else you just might think on this question

I myself think he is just about unlimiitles in his power.

But others may disagree with that asumption.

    Jay!

  115. Captain Shade Says:

This is an odd question. Though brought about by a certain banned topic, it actually isn’t part of it (even though most of his companions are female). So I thought it safe to ask…Aside from the fob watch essence thing, which I’m sure there’s a work around. If the Chamelian Arch can turn a Timelord from a Human back into a Timelord…Would it be feasable for it to turn a companion from a Human to a Timelord / Timelady?

  116. Captain Chaotica Says:

That’s a freaky idea…that had sort of occurred to me, actually.

…but I didn’t consider it for very long, because I strongly suspect that that way, extremely Mary Sue fanfiction lies.
To wit: Ordinary person suddenly made Special and with Powers, not like all you ordinary lot that I have to deal with all the time at school/work/on the ‘net, and maybe now that I’m a Time Lord like him the Doctor will feel okay about falling in love with “me”! Then they get to “die” dramatically and romantically and heroically in his arms, while saving the entire universe, AND, just naturally “happen” to regenerate into a totally hot sexy beautiful body that is exactly the way the writer always wanted to look.

You _know_ there are people out there who’d write it. :P

It might be halfway interesting if the problems that would come with that are also explored. Like, what if you turned into a Time Lord but were still living your normal life. The first time you get “killed” in front of 21st century Earthlings… (”Hey, what happened to that woman who got shot? Where did she go? Did _you_ do something to her? That jacket really doesn’t fit you…” (They look down and see the bullet hole and blood.) ” Why are you wearing the dead girl’s jacket, you freak?!” etc…)

But a more serious answer is that perhaps it cannot put in something that was NEVER there. Like, if you _used_ to have Time Lord powers, you can have them _back_, but a human attempting to go the other way…well, there are lots of stories in mythology of mortals who tried to have powers Like Unto the Gods and what happened to _them_.
…I don’t think I’d be the first one to try it, put it that way. I think I’d stand back and let Unnamed Companion have a go ahead of me. :P

Anyway. Wow, are we off the topic. And sorry if I irritated you, Rich. Guess I just picked exactly the wrong time to leap into _that_ discussion, heh. It’s cool though–I pretty much _said_ my entire piece right in the first post, so…

    …Notorious

  117. Turnip Says:

That’s why you have to transform them into a graying, middle aged shlump. :D And if they’re going to be a Time Lord with the Doctor, they must also adopt his habit of questionable fashion sense and wear something tacky.

But, wouldn’t they just transform into Gallifreyans, not Time Lords? They’d have to go through all the training and stuff to be Time Lords, right? Heh…I’d like to see the Doctor put up with 100+ years of teaching temporal basics…

  118. Barima Says:

Oi, Turnip, only the 6th Doctor definitely has “questionable fashion sense”, don’tcha know ;). In fact, I find most of the Doctor’s outfits inspirational:

    1. Fourth (pre-final season, although it takes some style - or balls - to pull off the burgundy hunting look. Also, the scarves are king, the coats and jackets are effortlessly snappy and the overall look just suited him to a tee, whether he was being a wanderer or an authoritative Time Lord)

    2. Seventh (darker 2nd costume - successfully implies that he’s both fun and moody, made his general appearance less clownish in such a simple yet obvious manner and has lots of excellent personal touches like his chain and his use of his hat and umbrella as props)

    3. First (perfectly distinguished - “a citizen of the universe, and a gentleman, to boot”. And his cape-and-trousers combo would be right in style today)

    4. Second (shabby-gentleman-chic done right, basically, a concept that has certainly lasted this far. Also wears his pocket square haflway down his front like a pro. And really, how many dudes besides Troughton could ever wear a fur coat without looking like a tool?)

    5. Tenth (blue suit. While I think it’s possibly the outfit that tries too hard in some ways - the suit-with-trainers-trend dating the look as much as the Fifth Doctor’s - and falls down in others - it plays it too safe in its plainness, which is fine when you’re modelling for Topman but uninspired when you’re the Doctor. But after the drabness of the brown suit, the blue and red gets back to the idea that the Doctor likes to stand out and the coat really lifts the outfit. Plus, at the end of the day, it’s the only good example of a suit with trainers and does suit the emo indie geek Ten is at heart)

  119. wulfae Says:

Hmmm… Which Q are we talking about? The Q who usually shows up to play with people is not really like the Doctor, and I think the Doctor might find him just as irritating as Picard does. Here Q is, with all of these wonderful, magical powers (like the rest of the Time Lords) and he does nothing to actually *help* people with them. They’re only used for his own amusement. We’ve not really seen the rest of the Continuum, so maybe they’re off being helpful people, but after having seen the other Q in that one where Q was turned human, well… They all seem to be similar. The others just don’t go annoying Picard and co.

I hope we’re not mean, Chaotica? Welcome to the discussion. :) I’ve thought about the Chameleon arch turning people into Gallifreyans, as Turnip pointed out, as well. However… They seem like a pompous race, that looks down their collective noses at the rest of the universe. Since it’s not something the Doctor’s just jiggery pokeried into existince, what with the Master having one too, it seems likely that they’d put limits on it. Such as: no inferior species can re-engeneer themselves into a Gallifreyan.

If a fanfiction author could figure out a non-mary sue-ish way to write that, however, it might be fun to explore those very problems you were talking about, Chaotica. Or is it Notorious?

How crummy would it be to actually be a Gallifreyan with the possibility of being a Time Lord if you can pilot a TARDIS, only have no TARDIS’?

And I just realised… In this way, if someone were to *magically* become a Gallifreyan who wants to be a Time Lord, it’s quite a bit like Luke trying to be a jedi, since I don’t see the Doctor being all patient and teaching in an Academy like setting. It’d be more trial by fire.

  120. Sinead Says:

In ‘Human Nature’ the Doctor says to Martha: “Chameleon Arch. Re-writes my biology. Literally changes every single cell in my body. I’ve set it to human.” This implies that it can be set to change a Time Lords into other species besides human.

At present I choose to go with the notion that the Chameleon Arch is specific to Time Lords. >>> It caused the Doctor extreme pain when he used it. Even if it were possible to “re-set” the device for Human use — most likely could not withstand the forces involved and would die in the process.

(Sorry to go off track. Tried to be brief.)

  121. Lennie Says:

Yeah, I guess it tis a bit girly that 9 slaps him. Then again I had been eating sugar cubes most of the night so I can’t be held responsible for my actions.

  122. Laura Says:

it’s quite a bit like Luke trying to be a jedi, since I don’t see the Doctor being all patient and teaching in an Academy like setting. It’d be more trial by fire.
Man, that gives off all kinds of cool mental images. Although, really, adding the phrase “trial by fire” to anything to do with the Doctor just seems like a gateway to niftyness.
It does seem like the sort of idea that should be relegated to fanfic. The Doctor being Gallifreyan makes him this amazing mysterious alien, pretty permenantly above humans. If a human could go up to that level, then it would take away some of the mystery and awe. Though…wasn’t there something about Ace…I don’t know, it probably wasn’t canon. Can’t remember.

I have to argue about the brown suit being drab. Surely not as colorful as previous outfits, but certainly not drab. Brown pinstripes and converse? Pretty nifty, and I kind of like the warm brown look better than the blue. I only wish he’d had the red trainers with it. Or maybe blue trainers.

Sixth Doctor? Questionable fashion sense? Questionable fashion sense! Of all the nerve! Now, really, if anyone’s outfit suited his character to a tee… “I’m here, pay attention to me, and I don’t care who I offend because darn it, I am that amazing!” Besides, man, red spats. Red spats!

Lennie–I really do want to see Eccleston come back to the show for a brief Nine meets Ten sort of thing, and while I’d hope the absence of Rose wouldn’t be too big a deal (Nine knows that companions aren’t forever and all), I’d like to see him, oh, I don’t know, haul Ten up by the lapels and threaten him angrily or something like. Not about Rose. Just for being a git. I don’t think Nine would be able to put up with Ten for more than five minutes.

You do an incredible job of capturing each of the foibles and charm that make each Doctor unique. Your sense of perportion is excellent. The storyis wonderful and each chapter moves it along at the perfect pace. Bravo!

I’ve been a Doctor Who fan since I first came across it on a PBS station in Boston waaaay back in the late 1970s. Tom Baker was my first Doctor and is still my favorite. He’s a challenge to draw but you capture the wit and insanity that made him so interesting.

And it’s very nice to see that you’ve worked in most of the companions (even Sarah Jane and Harry Sulivan!).

    More, more!

  126. Renegade Dalek Says:

I think 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 have the best clothing, although if you watch the Jon Pertwee episodes you’ll see that he had 4 costumes which might have even been five he had the black suit and red-lined cape, then the soft red smoking jacket and trousers, then the same in green then what looks like a blue suit similar to 10’s for a bit of The Green Death* then he went back to the smoking jacket, now blue. Tom Baker had a short red garden style jacket, a brown coat, a grey coat with a black V-neck, then he changed his scarf to red and purple one, and wore a big double button red jacket. Peter Davison changed in season 21 when the V shaped lines on the neck of his jumper became thicker and more numerous with thin black lines between the thick red ones, unlike the simple red stripe on his earlier jumper, and a similar pattern appeared around his waist which was blank before, Sylvester McCoy started out with a similar costume at first glance with a white hat with red and green patterns on a band around it, then a yellow jumper with green lines and red ?s then white trousers, then his yellowy grey jacket was swapped for a brown one in Battlefield.

    * and if anyone says Dr. Who is unsuitable for kids this is the only episode they can complain about, I read somewhere that most of the Giant Maggots were inflated condoms, I have no idea which idiot decided to use them.

  127. Barima Says:

Laura, as noted, I appreciate the look from a compositional standpoint (and again, Tennant, or at least his costumers, should be congratulated for literally the only workable use of this style, especially for resisting the temptation to make the Doctor’s trousers skinny like every other doofus rocking the suit/Converse look), but seriously, brown for suits is totally questionable and the kindest thing I can say about it is that it matches Tennant’s hair - and that in itself adds to the suit’s air of anonymity. It just seems lifeless and the lack of cool/imaginative ties and other accessories worn with it doesn’t help at all (I’d second your Converse choices for it in a heartbeat). It’s a suit colour for accountants and really (the sonic screwdriver auditing accounts? Does everything else), I wasn’t surprised that the brown suit was specifically worn in the last batch of Series 3 episodes, which required the Doctor to be moodier, bossier, less dashing and more unpleasant (akin to how McCoy’ colours changed to reflect his mood - the Scottish Doctors are quite the ruthless pair). I actually liked that from a personality standpoint he adopted more optimistic clothing colours despite being in post-Rose emo mode, but after all the publicity and merchandising shots, it was worn for less than half the season

I was kinda teasing about Six. His clothes are well tailored and he’d be all the rage in Shibuya, Tokyo. And spats rock in almost any colour. Still, Colin and JNT badmouthing it later doesn’t help its case. Suitable in his case, sure, but still, the Ace Ventura of Time Lords, know what I’m sayin’?

Anyway, to help jog your memory, the old script team did intend to have the Doctor enrol Ace at the Prydonian Academy on Gallifrey for Timey Lord training. And although I never read the books, I do know about her career as (oh dear) Time’s Vigilante (so very 90’s), which replaced the previous gameplan. As a favourite companion, I was disappointed she doesn’t have a TV-shown departure and have a totally simple idea to bring her into the current show in the same one-off way Sarah was initially brought onto it that also accounts for Sophie Aldred’s current looks. Obviously, with Sarah’s current sacred-cow-of-the-companions status with the Who team, they’d never actually dredge up such old, unfinished business, but my idea for her would simply keep her vital without having her rejoin the show, akin to Martha’s new job keeping her in the loop for guesties

  128. Captain Chaotica Says:

I like Six’s look, myself…I’d totally be willing to wear it to a convention (but probably not down the street on some random day…) I fully recognise that it’s GAH! eyeball-scarring, but at the same time, I think it’s so horrible that it somehow passes _through_ that and back out into pretty, in a wonderfully, wonderfully twisted and perverse kind of way. Of course, I don’t really have traditional fashion sense as far as I’m aware (tie-dyed t-shirts with black velvet stirrup pants, bright orange socks and white-and-black saddle shoes for one of my summer looks, for example) so I am perhaps not the best one to judge an outfit. :P
That said, I kinda like the brown on Ten. I dunno….to me that’s not so much “accountant” as, I think of it as a kind of old-fashioned suit colour, that isn’t worn as often anymore in modern day. Blue and grey suits are “normal”, but when I see brown I think of a funny little eccentric professor (not THAT “Professor!”, Ace…), whereas blue just makes me think: businessman/yuppie/politician. Maybe it’s because my astronomy teacher wore a brown suit with funky little bow-tie and suspenders instead of belt, I dunno… (shrug)

And I freakin’ LOVE Three’s sense of style. I liked that kind of look long before I finally got around to watching Who properly (I’m a fairly new Whovian, guys, by the way)…so elegant. In fact, I had been known to show up to _school or work_ in my black velvet blazer with (one of!) my white ruffly shirt(s) underneath it and the cuffs carefully pulled down to show _past_ the blazer’s cuffs, dark pants, and boots…just because! Did I get looks? Of course. Did I stop wearing it or feel the slightest bit embarrassed? No. :)

As for turning into a Gallifreyan instead of a Time Lord…yes, that’s a good point–you wouldn’t automatically get the ability to regenerate (or still move when in a stopped-time field, or…etc.), because I always got the impression that has something to do with the training you get at the academy, or some ceremonial thing they do to you with the Holy Hand Grenade of Rassilon, or whatever, when you graduate…’cos in “The Deadly Assasin”, for one, we clearly see people just _die_ die from reasons other than staser, and nobody seems the least bit surprised. (Runcible being stabbed comes to mind here.) It’s always mildly irked me when somebody writes about their fan-character who is the child of (Doctor) and (Companion) and say that they’re “half Time Lord”. They’re _not_, that’s not genetic…

And no, Wulfae, I don’t think you guys are “mean”, exactly, but…considering a few people here’s reactions to anything even _remotely_ outside of canon I did feel a little nervous expressing my views on That Subject we’re not allowed to talk about anymore. Heh. As for whether my name is “Captain Chaotica” or “Notorious”, well, “Notorious” was my first ‘net name from a long time ago and I tend to sign off with it to kind of keep a sense of…continuity, just because I feel like it. Tradition, I guess.
(And Laura, hi! Remember me from DeviantArt? :))

    Shutting up finally…
