Wavatars!
December 18th, 2007Shamus Young, over at Twenty-Sided Tales, developed a way-cool WordPress plugin that amused me mightily. Meet the Wavatars! Generated by the system based on commenters’ email addresses and names, each wavatar is unique to the specific commenter (as long as you post using the same name/email each time, naturally). I may muck about with the formatting when I have some time, but this is cool for now!
You can read more about Wavatars, the plugin’s development and download the plugin for your own blog at Shamus’ site, linked above.

Nifty, now I have the same wavatar on both sites. I got my 20-Sided wavatar yesterday, and amazingly it managed to emulate both my specs and my evil grin.

Wow -that is a neat concept. Also, it’s somewhat freaky how small my internet worlds can be, as I have been following Shamus Young entirely independently of this site ;D

Glad you like it, thanks.

The man himself! Glee! We’ve been fans of DMotR since early on; you do awesome work, both comic and blog. Thank you so much!

Well, let’s test this out. Engage!

Interesting

Whee…

Alrite, let’s try this thing.

Emma - I had the same feeling initially, since I know DMotR separately from T10D. But really, if someone’s a connoisseur of good webcomics then it’s not that much of a surprise, I guess. But yeah, I originally found DMotR through Irregular Webcomic! (which ironically is now garnering more attention since David Morgan-Mar is now doing ‘Darths and Droids’ as an analogue to DMotR), and I found Rich’s comic through a Doctor Who board I belong to.
In the end, I guess it’s just all geeks together. lol We run in the same circles, even if it’s from different directions.

Let’s see what it produces for me!

I think I like them more than my Gravatar
December 21st, 2007 at 10:51 am
And these are universal?
December 21st, 2007 at 10:52 am
Yes they are, but mine is too big for what it allows. Is this because I made my first one on Shamus’ site?
December 23rd, 2007 at 3:19 am
Oh, why not? Let’s try’er out, eh?
Scooby dooby flooby!

Hey, Colley, that’s my sound effect! You read Zebra Girl?
Y’know, about these Wavatars. I could live with the draggy load times, I guess, if I just had a face I liked. I’m used to making my own avatars, and it bugs me to have one “assigned” to me. If we must have them, is there any way to… I don’t know… at least… get a new one?
December 26th, 2007 at 11:40 pm
Yes, you can - Wavatars are designed to work with Gravatars, which are individually-chosen wordpress comment avatar thingies. You can set up your own Gravatar … somehow. I don’t have the link on-hand, but it should be easily googleable.
December 27th, 2007 at 12:47 am
Well, thanks Hilary, I did set up a Gravatar… though I’m not sure it’s working here…
December 27th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
OK; I messed with the options, and gravatars should be fully functional now. Hope this helps, Joe!
December 28th, 2007 at 1:06 am
Hey awesome! Thanks, Hilary.

Sorry it took so long; we’re still visiting my in-laws and have only intermittent internet access. Have a good new year, everyone!
December 28th, 2007 at 2:09 pm
Well then, thanks yet again for finding the time. Have a great new year.

My email address has the word ‘vampire’ in it. I feel slightly jipped.
