The 10 Doctors: page 63

Team 1, made up of companions Turlough, Jo, Zoe and Susan, stop when they notice that Romana isn’t behind them. Jo and Turlough briefly argue over whether to go back and rescue Romana or continue on their mission to secure the Rani’s TARDIS, finally agreeing to do the latter and go back for her after.

Team 2, made up of companions Tegan, Peri, Ace and Rose, stop when they notice that Jamie isn’t with them.

Wow, who’dve thought Turlough was a take charge kind of companion? Go Trion!

I don’t know who I feel sorrier for, Ace or Rose ;)

  2. Heather

hahaha I’m loving the way you’ve captured Ace. “Keep it in your pants” had me chuckling for a good few minutes this morning. :)

I’m going to join the team of nitpickers, though, and point out that “ourselves” shouldn’t be spelled “outselves”. ;)

  3. Rich

    Hahahahahha
Isn’t it? Aw man. *throws out crappy dictionary*

Seriously, yeah, I type these things out OVER my own handwriting so it’s hard to see, then I’m too tired and/or lazy to doublecheck before I flatten it and save it. More lazy than tired most of the time, I suppose. Thanks for pointing it out. Another typo to go back over someday.

  4. Jess

    Yay! I love the companions.
Having been born in the wrong time (damn that I don’t have a TARDIS!) there a quite a few classic series that I haven’t seen, so occasionally its hard to know which companion is which, especially the older ones. But I’m coping.
Thank you so such for doing this! You are like a god.

  5. Rich

Only more corporeal and less omnipotent. :D

    Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying it!
And I’ve always kinda felt the companions were more for flavour and to motivate the Doctor, myself. That is, after Ian and Barbara left.

  6. alan

just read it through in one sitting and love it love it love it. Keep it coming and thank you to “behind the sofa” for the heads up.

  7. Amanda

Sat down and read Dr. Who from beginning to end. I’m in love!

Keep up the fantastic work. I’ll be watching you on Deviantart too :)

  8. Nobilis

I always wondered what happened to Susan. Left behind on a post-Dalek invasion Earth, she had displayed some interesting powers if not a huge amount of initiative. A thread left dangling, to be sure.

  9. Lisa

Rose needs to be taken down a peg. Go Ace!

  10. Lisa

Oh, and in a wonderful twist of fate, in the Children in Need special, Ten tells Five how much he loved being him. I thought of this comic and couldn’t stop giggling.

  11. Sean

Turlough always struck me as dutiful sort of chap. He’s a nice guy underneath it all.

  12. Kari

In the beginning, I don’t think Turlough was a “dutiful sort of chap”. He grew into it though, most notably in Frontios.

  13. Chris

I’m not buying this handsome, heroic Turlough. He needs to be a lot shiftier, and perhaps his face a little longer? You’ve done a really good job with all the other characters, but I have to concentrate hard to hear Turlough’s voice in my mind as I read his lines.

Anyway, now I have an extension on my previous request: you’ve got to draw Peri RUNNING in all the frames from now on.

  14. Mreen

Ah now, Turlough always meant well, right after keeping himself alive and not captured was his goal to keep his friends so Seems in character to me. I mean, he outwitted the Black Guardian, which we havent really seen anyone besides the Doctor do before, and supposed to be the equivelent of 16-17-18yrs old, not quite a legal grown up.

I’m sure he’d be the first to protest rushing into danger, and most likely to feel guilty enough to make sure a rescue plan gets put into place later. May not be a rescue plan he designs, tho he’s bound to modify it a bit to give himself a safer role or as he’d put it “Increase the odds of success”

  15. Os

Damn, dude, this is simply awesome. Seriously, Drax? (And loving the Doctor nine look! Naturally!) You’ve got everything in here. I’ve read all 63 pages in the past day; again, thanks to the heads up from Behind the Sofa.

Again, excellent work. At the rate you’re going vis-a-vis the multiple plotlines, this thing should be what, 700 pages in the end? Heh, heh.

(And right now i’m waiting for the appearance of the Valeyard — no, please, no…)

  16. Kat

I, too, have the trouble stated above in recognizing the older companions (mostly just Jo and Zoe, the two I’ve never even heard of before…) and for a second there I didn’t recognize Susan until that lovely profile of her. However, that is mostly my stupidity in play. Even so, thanks ever so much for the little written blurbs. It helps me out a bunch to know who is who!

I can see why (actor’s extreme ages/depatures non-withstanding) this would not be easily made for live action TV….so many characters to keep track of!

I dunno how you do it, Rich. You’re inhuman or something!

  17. Rich

A little of column A, a little of column B….

As for the companions, some are EASY to draw, others, not so much.
Susan is excedingly difficult to draw for some reason. I can’t quite place what it is that makes her HER. Unlike Zoe, who needs a round face and her distinctive hair cut, or Peri who just needs big boobs in a bodysuit.

I think my Mel is AWFUL, but as long as she’s skeletal with that hair, she’s recognizable.

A lot of this works almost entirely because of context. Like, say, my Sylvester McCoy’s only look like Sylvester McCoy because he’s got an umbrella, a ??? sweater, and is standing next to the other Doctors.

    The monsters are easier.

  18. Liz

I think McCoy’s face is wonderful, and very deinitely him.

I have to agree with someone earier…I don’t know who I feel soorier for, Ace or Rose.

Probaly Ace- Rose deserves to be taken down a peg; Ace doesn’t deserve to have to put up with Rose.

  19. Gallifrey

    Yay! Lots of updates.
Like the above poster, I thought of you and your fabby web-comic during Time Crash! Those frames of 5 and 10 at the beginning are amongst my favourites.

    Go Turlough!

  20. Liz

Yeah, so did I. I thought ‘oh, Rich is prophetic’! ANYway, I had a question for Rich- Why is Susan wearing a trenchcoat-type thing? I mean, I like it, I’m just curious.

  21. Phantom Drummer

May I? Last time Susan was seen in the series, i.e. “The Five Doctors,” she was wearing a trench coat. I can’t recall if she ever wore it during the First Doctor era (I’m an old fan but not THAT old ;)) Anyone else know?

  22. Phantom Drummer

  23. Rich

The reference photo I’m using has Susan in a little leathery cap thing and a white coat. Not a good choice for her, I don’t think. It isn’t really representative of her. But that’s the image I had to go by. Judging by the fact that in the photo, the Doctor is wearing his little specs and his wooly cap and stripey scarf, I’m guessing it’s either a promotional image from the pilot, or a still from one of the two pilots (”An Unearthly Child” was filmed twice, the second time with slightly different direction and some significant dialogue changes. One line which changed would have suggested the Doctor and Susan Earthlings from the future rather than aliens)

  24. UndeniablyNikki

LOL @ Ace and Rose being on the same team.

  25. Julia

It just keeps on geting better and better. Love all the charaters and the way they look! I hope Martha is in this! Um, Rich, if, in the new series of dr who, he gets a new assistant, will they go in the comic too? Just want to know to see the way you draw them.

  26. Laura

“LOL @ Ace and Rose being on the same team.”

Yeah, not exactly brilliant planning there, Romana. Heh. C’mon, Ace, referring to Jamie as “That nice-lookin’ Scottish bloke” is like referring to the Fourth Doctor as “The one with the scarf” or the Tenth as “the spikey-haired fella in the pin-stripes.” It’s just a statement of fact.
…some men just have the legs for a kilt… *naughty look*

I think McCoy looks spot-on, from the pictures I’ve seen.

Ah man, the special! Is there anything more fun than watching David Tennant fanboy Davidson as the Tenth Doctor fanboying the Fifth? “The crickety-crickey stuff and the…the stick of celery…” And anyone who did not tear up, even just a little little bit at “You were MY Doctor,” then, well…I dunno. And bravo, Rich, for being spot-on with their relationship. Like everyone’s been saying, I just kept thinking of your bit of Five-and-Ten interaction.

  27. The Adventurer

Loving the rapid updates. Keep it up!

I do think Susan looks a little… “Manish” in all but panel three (which, I guess makes up for Jamie’s feminine curves when clubbing that Cyberman. :D )

Good job all around, if I could draw half as well as you…

  28. Jeff Crowder (doctor_76)

I am loving Ace & Rose’s relationship!!! It is funny because Ace always saw the 7th Doctor as a father figure and Rose sees the 9th & 10th Doctors on more of a romantic level. You could almost see the anamosity between the two of them as a child (Ace) being envious or resentful of a step-mother (Rose) coming in between the father/daughter relationship… Just my take on things!!! Keep up the good work!

  29. Liz

Thank you, Phantom and Rich. I fu=igured she had worn it at some point, but I hadn’t seen it, so I just wanted to check.

  30. Pauline

    Love Turlouygh’s eyebrows. Hehehee!
